What can you change?

Most of us have heard the serenity prayer at some time in our lives.  The wisdom contained in the brief words spans many of the problems and challenges in life, including finances.  For those who are not familiar here are the words:

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
The courage to change the things I can,
And, the wisdom to know the difference.

If you are In The Trenches there are some things that you simply cannot change.  Some of these would include the fact that you were laid off, how long it will take the national economy to recover, or the fact that electricity prices are going up.  No matter how angry, frustrated, or hurt you are by these things and more, you cannot change them.  For these things we need serenity.

There is much that we can change.  Our budget, where we live, if we open that small business, or even get dressed in the morning are all things we can change and improve upon.

That wisdom is the key to knowing where to start to improve our situation.  Though the assessment may be tiring and difficult it is the first step.  We may find hidden areas where we can save money, improve income, or change our habits on a temporary or permanent basis to be able to see that light at the end of our dark tunnel.  Often that is all that it takes to get us moving in the right direction.  Just a small spot of light can direct us out of our tunnel of despair.  Look for it and start moving.

Budgeting is indeed in our control. Depending on the rate of inflation, we can prioritize our needs and control the outflow of money.

Great thought. Too many times we either focus on the things that we can't change - thereby wasting our energy and time, or we give up and decide that everything is out of our control.

There must be a balance.
